এক ছিল মুচি। খুবই সাদাসিধে মানুষ। সারাদিন জুতো বানাতো, আর কাজ করতে করতে গুনগুন করে গান গাইত। তার জীবনে টাকা-পয়সার কোনো বিশেষ জায়গা ছিল না। সে মনে করত, সুখ মানে নিজের যা আছে তা নিয়ে খুশি থাকা।
তার প্রতিবেশী ছিল এক ধনী ব্যাংকার। একদিন তিনি এসে বললেন, “তোমার আয়-রোজগার কেমন?”
মুচি হেসে বলল, “আমার যা পাই, তাই দিয়ে ভালোভাবেই চলে যায়। বেশি টাকা-পয়সার চিন্তা করি না।”
ব্যাংকার ভাবলেন, মুচি তো একেবারে গরিব। তার কিছু সাহায্য করা উচিত। তাই তিনি একদিন মুচিকে এক হাজার টাকা দিলেন আর বললেন, “এই টাকা জমিয়ে রাখো। ভবিষ্যতে কাজে লাগবে।”
মুচি এত টাকা দেখে প্রথমে খুব খুশি হল। কিন্তু তারপর থেকেই শুরু হলো ঝামেলা। সারাক্ষণ চিন্তা—এই টাকা কোথায় রাখলে নিরাপদ হবে! সে ঘরের মাটির নিচে টাকা লুকিয়ে রাখল। কিন্তু তার শান্তি যেন পুরো উধাও হয়ে গেল। রাতের বেলা ঘুম আসত না, মনে হতো কেউ বুঝি চুরি করে নিয়ে যাবে।
এরপর থেকে তার দিনগুলোও অশান্তিতে কাটতে লাগল। টাকার চিন্তায় কাজের আনন্দ হারিয়ে গেল, গান গাওয়া বন্ধ হয়ে গেল।
একদিন সে আর সহ্য করতে পারল না। টাকাটা হাতে নিয়ে সোজা ব্যাংকারের কাছে গেল। হাসিমুখে বলল, আপনার এই টাকাটা আপনি ফেরত নিন। আমার আগের জীবনটাই অনেক বেশি ভালো ছিল।
