Once there lived a happy cobbler who passed his days working and singing. A rich businessman neighbour said to him one day, “How much a year do you earn?” The cobbler replied that he had never saved his one year’s income, and even he did not know how many days a year there were.

Hearing this, the banker became surprised. He asked the cobbler what he did with his money. The cobbler said that he lived from hand to mouth. In fact, the cobbler earned very little and spent all the money he earned in a day to support himself, and he had no ambition.

He had no demand for amenities that he had not possessed. So poverty could not stand in the way of his happiness. At this, a deep thought occurred in the mind of the banker. He sighed. “How helpless I am!” A vast property belonged to the banker. But a dissatisfaction always troubled.

তার এমন কোনও সুযোগ-সুবিধার দাবি ছিল না যা সে ধারণ করেনি। তাই দারিদ্র্য তার সুখের পথে বাধা হতে পারেনি। এই কথা শুনে ব্যাংকারের মনে গভীর চিন্তা জাগলো। সে দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলল। “আমি কত অসহায়!” ব্যাংকারের বিশাল সম্পত্তি ছিল। কিন্তু একটা অসন্তুষ্টি সবসময়ই অস্থির করে তুলত।

He said to himself, “Ten thousand taka is a lot of money.” He could not think where to keep the money.

He did not find a safe place to keep the bag. He dug a hole in his hut and kept the money there. But he always thought that his money could be stolen at any time. This anxiety kept him awake, and his sleep fled away at night. He could not even devote himself to his work. As a result, his life became more miserable. Peace and happiness vanished from his life. The cobbler gradually realized that he had money, but no peace of mind.

Moral: True happiness lies in contentment, not in wealth.
