Giashuddin Azam Shah was the ruler of Bengal. He was a kind and just ruler. He was very fond of archery. One day, when he was practising archery, all of a sudden, his arrow missed its target and pierced the breast of a young boy, who died instantly. The boy was the son of a widow. She went to the Quazi and complained against the Sultan for justice.
The Quazi called for the Sultan and said, “According to the law of the country, you shall be punished. But if you can please the widow by giving her compensation for the loss, you may get rid of the due punishment.” The Sultan gladly did it, and the widow was satisfied. Then the Quazi got down from his seat and showed the Sultan due respect.
The kind Sultan then drew out his sword and said, “Listen to me, Mr. Quazi, if you had failed to do justice to the widow, I would have cut off your head with this sword.” The Quazi also drew out his cane and said, “If you had disobeyed my justice, I would have beaten you with this cane.” The Sultan thanked the Quazi for his brave and true judgement and embraced him.
Moral: justice must be fair for everyone, even the ruler.

গিয়াসউদ্দিন আজম শাহ ছিলেন বাংলার শাসক। তিনি একজন দয়ালু এবং ন্যায়পরায়ণ শাসক ছিলেন। তিনি তীরন্দাজিতে খুবই পছন্দ করতেন। একদিন, যখন তিনি তীরন্দাজি অনুশীলন করছিলেন, হঠাৎ তার তীর লক্ষ্যভ্রষ্ট হয়ে একটি ছোট ছেলের বুকে বিদ্ধ হয়, এবং সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সে মারা যায়। ছেলেটি ছিল একজন বিধবার একমাত্র সন্তান। সে কাজীর কাছে গিয়ে সুলতানের বিরুদ্ধে ন্যায়বিচারের জন্য অভিযোগ করে।
কাজী সুলতানকে ডেকে বললেন, “দেশের আইন অনুসারে, আপনাকে শাস্তি দেওয়া হবে। কিন্তু যদি বিধবাকে তার ক্ষতির জন্য উপযুক্ত ক্ষতিপূরণ দিয়ে খুশি করতে পারো, তাহলে তুমি উপযুক্ত শাস্তি থেকে মুক্তি পেতে পারো।” সুলতান আনন্দের সাথে ক্ষতিপূরণ দেন এবং বিধবা সন্তুষ্ট হলেন। তারপর কাজী তার আসন থেকে নেমে সুলতানকে যথাযথ সম্মান জানান।
দয়ালু সুলতান তখন তার তরবারি বের করে বললেন, “আমার কথা শোনো, মিস্টার কাজী, যদি তুমি বিধবার প্রতি ন্যায়বিচার করতে ব্যর্থ হতে, তাহলে আমি এই তরবারি দিয়ে তোমার মাথা কেটে ফেলতাম।” কাজীও তার লাঠি বের করে বললেন, “যদি তুমি আমার ন্যায়বিচার অমান্য করতে, তাহলে আমি এই লাঠি দিয়ে তোমাকে প্রহার করতাম।” সুলতান কাজীকে তার সাহসী ও সত্য বিচারের জন্য ধন্যবাদ জানান এবং তাকে জড়িয়ে ধরেন।

Long ago, in Bengal, there was a brave king named Ghiyasuddin Azam Shah. He ruled from Sonargaon near Dhaka with kindness and care. People loved him because he always wanted justice and peace in the kingdom. He liked learning, books, and making friends with other rulers.
One day, while practising archery, his arrow accidentally hit a young boy, and the boy died. The boy’s mother, a poor widow, asked for justice. The Quazi courageously brought the king to court and followed the law. Even though it was the king’s mistake, he accepted it and gave the widow compensation.
Moral: Justice must be fearless, and equal for all.
